Kansas Business Entity Search (LLC, Corporation, Partnership)

The Kansas Secretary of State maintains a searchable database of all the registered business entities. Basic information about any business can be accessed on the Business Entity Search Station (BESS) web page.

The database contains information on – LLCs, Corporations, Partnerships, and Domestic/Foreign entities. 

Please note, following types of business structures are not registered with the SOS and cannot be searched here:

  1. Sole Proprietorships
  2. DBA
  3. Assumed Name
  4. Trade Name
  5. Fictitious Name

Aspiring entrepreneurs can utilize the search function to check for business name availability. Additionally, the tool can also be used to gather information about public businesses.

Navigating through the SOS website can be confusing especially for the first time users.

Don’t worry, on this page, we’ve provided exact step-by-step instructions on how to carry out the search on SOS website.

Kansas Secretary of State Business Entity Search

You can conduct the search by,

  1. Business name (Also useful for checking business name availability)
  2. Business ID number (not the FEIN)
  3. By any keyword – Based on the Partial business name.
  4. By a resident agent’s full name
  5. By a resident agent’s name – keyword (Partial name)

By Business Name 

Step 1: Open Kansas business entity search page – Link.
Step 2: Click on the ‘Business Entity Name‘ link.
Step 3: On the next page, enter the name of the business you’re looking to search in the text box.

Search Tips

  • Don’t enter common terms such as investment, business etc. Such terms may fetch very broad results.
  • Don’t use punctuations like full stop, comma etc.

Step 4: Click on the ‘Search‘ button.
Step 5: On the next page, you’ll be able to view the list of business names which matched the searched criteria.

Additionally, you will also be able to view the name of the company, ID number, and current status.

Note: If no matching results are found, this would mean that the business name is available and can be registered. 

Additionally, if you’re unable to find the business in the list, then there is a possibility that the business is not registered in Kansas or it may be a sole proprietorship, DBA, or fictitious name.

Step 6: Select the desired business by clicking on the ‘View Record‘ button.

Step 7: On the next page, you’ll be able to view detailed information about the business.

Additionally, on this page, business owners can also request for the certificate of good standing, file for the name change, update resident agent information, and view business documents.

By Business ID Number

Use this search option, if you know the Business ID number assigned by the Secretary of state. Follow the steps below to conduct the search.

Note: Business ID number is not FEIN (Federal Employer Identification Number).

Step 1: Open Kansas Secretary of State business division page.
Step 2: Click on the ‘Search by Business Entity ID Number‘ link.
Step 3: Enter the unique ID number in the text field. Don’t enter any dash or spaces in the search box.
Step 4: Click on the ‘Search‘ button.
Step 5: If the ID number is correct, you will be able to view complete details about the business.

By Keyword

Use this search, when you are unsure about the complete name of the business. Please note this search may fetch very broad results.

Step 1: Open Kansas Business entity search page.
Step 2: Click on ‘Search by Keyword‘ link.
Step 3: On the next page, enter the keyword in the text field. Do not use common terms and punctuations in the search text.
Step 4: Click on the ‘Search‘ button.
Step 5: On the next page, you can view the results. Click on the ‘View Record‘ button to view further details.

By Resident Agent full Name

Use this search, if you are looking to find the list of companies with which a Resident Agent is associated with. Please note you would need to enter the full name of the resident agent. If you don’t know the complete name, use the resident agent keyword search.

Step 1: Open Kansas SOS search page.
Step 2: Click on the ‘Search by Resident Agent‘ link.
Step 3: Enter the agent name in the search box and click on the ‘Search‘ button.
Step 4: On the next page, you’ll be able to view the results.

In case the search does not yield any result, try searching again with an alternate name or use keyword search.

By resident agent’s name – Keyword

Use this search if you don’t know the complete name of the Resident Agent. Open KS business search page. Select ‘Search by Resident Agent name – Keyword‘ button. On the next page, enter the name and click on the ‘Search‘ button.
