The Corporations Division of the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth holds records of all the corporations and business entities registered in the state. The Secretary of Commonwealth keeps records of the formation, amendment, and dissolution of various business entities such as Corporation, LLC, LLP, LP etc.
Massachusetts Business Entity Name Search
On this page, we have provided step-by-step instructions to conduct a search for any business entity on Massachusetts Secretary of State website.
All the search terms will also be explained here; technical and otherwise.
Anyone who wishes to search for the business entities can do so in four different ways listed below:
- Entity Name (Company/LP/LLP/LLC)
- Individual (Officer/Director)
- Identification Number
- Filing Number
Search by Entity name
Step 1: Go to the MA Corporations Division business search page.
The search page will look like the image below:
Step 2: Enter the name of the business entity (Company/LP/LLP/LLC) you are looking for.
If you do not know the exact name of the business, you can use filters to assist you with search: Begins with, Exact match, Full text, and Soundex as shown in the image above.
For example, let’s try searching for ‘Plumber’ (refer to the image below).
Step 3: Once you are done entering the search term, click on ‘Search Corporations‘ to start the search.
Step 4: On the next page, you can view the search results.
The list of business entities and the following information pertaining to the businesses are displayed on the search results page.
- Entity Name
- ID Number
- Old ID Number
With the information available on the search results page, you can narrow down to the business you are looking for.
If the information available is not enough for you to find the specific business entity, you might want to open every entry to gather enough information before zeroing in on one.
Step 5: Click on the business entity you have selected.
Step 6: On the next page all the information associated with the business entity will be shown.
Search by an Individual Name
Step 1: Open the business entity search page (refer the image below) and select ‘Search by an individual name’.
Step 2: Enter the First Name, Middle Name and Last Name of the person. The First Name and the Last Name are mandatory fields.
If you do not know the exact name of the person you are searching, you have help in the form of search filters. The filters available are Begins with, Exact, Full text and Soundex.
Step 3: After entering the search terms, click on the ‘Search Corporations’ button.
Step 4: On the next page, the business entities with which the person is associated with will be shown.
You can view the following information about each entity:
- Name of the Person
- Individual Address
- Entity Name
- ID Number
- Old ID Number
With the information listed in the search results, you can narrow down the business entity you are looking for.
Step 4: Click on the business entity you have narrowed down to.
Step 5: On the next page all the information about the business entity will be shown.
Search by Identification Number
Each Massachusetts registered business is assigned a 9-digit unique ID. If you know the business ID, then you can directly search the business information.
Step 1: Open MA business entity search page and select ‘Search by Identification Number’.
Step 2: Enter the 9-digit ID Number of the business entity.
Step 3: Click on the ‘Search Corporations’ at the end of the page.
Step 4: On the next page, a business summary page will be displayed with the information pertaining to the business entity.
Search by Filing Number
A temporary filing number is assigned to each business who has filed the application of formation. One can check the status of the application using the filing number.
Step 1: Open Massachusetts business entity search page and select ‘Search by Filing Number’.
Step 2: Enter the filing number of the business entity you are looking for.
Step 3: Click on ‘Search Corporations’ button at the end of the page.
Step 4: The results page gives you the following information:
- Name of the filing
- Year Filed
- Date Filed
- Filing Number
- View PDF
Business Entity Summary
The business entity summary page contains the following information:
