Maine Business Entity & Corporation Search

To find information on any business registered in the state of Maine, one needs to search through Bureau of Corporations, Elections and Commissions (CEC) database. The CEC is a division of Maine Secretary of State responsible for all business filings and record keeping. It maintains an online tool which allows users to access information about any registered business entity, ranging from:

  1. Business Corporations
  2. Non-Profit Corporations
  3. Limited Partnerships
  4. Limited Liability Companies
  5. Limited Liability Partnerships
  6. General Partnerships
  7. Cooperatives

The CEC website serves as a repository of all the on file information for these registered entities. Basic information is available to the public for free, while certain documents can be procured at a fee. This can be useful for those looking to learn more about entities working in the state. The CEC database is also a helpful tool for new business owners to check the availability of their desired business name.

Maine Business Entity Search

There are two ways in which you can search for a business entity in Maine – by keyword, or by Charter Number.

 Search by Keyword

Step 1: Head to the Corporate Name Search on Maine CEC website – Link (opens in new tab).

Step 2: Enter the name of the business you are looking for in the ‘Keyword‘ text box. You can either enter complete name or partial name of the business. Use the wildcard (%) filter to find businesses starting with, ending with or containing a certain keyword.

For example: To search for a business name ‘ALEX CORP’ you can use following search queries:

  • Exact: ALEX CORP
  • Keyword: Alex%
  • Partial Keyword: %lex%

Step 3: Click on ‘Click Here to Search‘ button.

Step 4: On the next page, you can view the list of business names which matched the search query.  If you have found the right entity, click on ‘Information summary’ link on the right of the name to learn more about it.

In case you have not found the right entity, try searching again with an alternate keyword.

Step 6: On the next page, you can view the following information about the business:

Legal NameName of the Business Entity
Charter NumberRegistered charter number assigned to the business
Filing TypeBusiness legal structure
StatusCurrent standing with the secretary of state
Important DatesFiling Date / Expiration Date
State of JurisdictionName of the state where business was incorporated
Associated IndividualsNames and addresses of clerks / registered agents

To view list of filed documents click on ‘View list of filings’. This takes you to another page with a complete list of filings, such as the Articles of Incorporation, Annual report, Notices, Change of clerk documents, etc. You can download the images of the filed documents by paying a fee of $3 for uncertified document and $5 for the certified document.

Certified copy of the certificate of legal existence, is also available. The fee for the document is $10.

 Search by Charter Number

Each business is assigned a unique alphanumeric 10 digit charter number. If the charter number has only 9 digits, add a space between the 8th and the 9th character. Using the charter number one can directly lookup business information.

Step 1: Access the Maine CEC’s Corporate Name Search page here.  

Step 2: Input the Charter Number into the search box, ensuring it is 10 characters in length. Click on ‘Click Here to Search.

Step 3: If the Charter Number was entered correctly, you’ll see the details for your desired business.
