This article will show you, step-by-step, how to search for a registered business in the state of Minnesota. Searching for businesses is important when you are looking for name availability to open your own business. It is also useful to know the legal standing of a business, whether it is in good standing with the state. It also gives you more information on the business, such as the Address, the name and contact details of the Registered Agent.

Follow the guide below to search for businesses in the state of Minnesota.

Search by Business Name

Step 1: Open Minnesota  business filings search page (refer the image below).

Step 2: Select ‘Business Name‘ tab and the name of the business in the search box.

You can use filters ‘Begin with’ or ‘Contain’ to fine-tune your search. You can also look for only Active/Inactive corporations and choose to Exclude/Include prior names.

Step 3: Click the search button.

For example, we tried searching for “hairdressers” as you can see in the below image:

Step 4: On the next page, you can view the list of business names that match the entered string. Additionally, you can view Business Status, Business Type and Name type of each listing.  Based on available information, if you have found the correct listing go ahead, else you will have to try new search terms.

Step 5: Click on the ‘Details‘ link to view more information about the business. You will now see a more detailed page, like this one.

  • At the bottom of the page, you can check filing and renewal history of the business. To order normal or certified copies of any filed document, simply select the document and click ‘Order Selected Copies‘ button.
  • To file any amendments/renewal, click on ‘Renewals & Amendments‘ button at the top of the page. You would need to create an online account with ‘Business & Liens‘ division to file it.
Search by Filing number

If you know the Filing number of the Business you may use this search. Go to the corporation records search page and click on ‘File Number’next to the business name. Similar to ‘Search by Name’ follow the steps to conduct the search.

Note: Searching by filing number is accurate as each business is assigned a unique number by the secretary of state.
