Minnesota Business Entity & Corporation Search

Minnesota state shapeDepartment of Business & Liens, a subdivision of Minnesota Secretary of State holds the records of all the business entities registered in the state.

Basic information about the businesses such as owner’s name, address, etc. is a matter of public information. You can access these business entity records on the Secretary of State website for free.

Before we go ahead, here are a few points you should know:

On the SOS website, you can find information about DBAs, Corporations, LLCs, and Partnerships registered in the state.

  • Verify the legal status of any business
  • Find information about any registered business
  • For filing business documents by owners/agents

Minnesota Secretary of State Business Entity Search

You can conduct the business entity search by name or filing number. Below we’ve shared step-by-step instruction on how to carry out the search.


By Business Name

Step 1: Open Minnesota business filings search page (refer the image below).

Step 2: Select ‘Business Name‘ tab and enter the name of the business in the search box.

You can use filters like ‘Begin with‘ or ‘Contain‘ to fine-tune your search. You can also look for only Active/Inactive corporations and choose to Exclude/Include prior names.

Step 3: Click on the ‘Search‘ button.

For example, we tried searching for the keyword ‘hairdressers‘. Here is what the results look like:

Step 4: On the next page, you can view the list of business names that match the entered string.¬†Additionally, you can view ‘Business Status’, ‘Business Type’ and ‘Name type’ of each listing.

Based on the available information, click on the corresponding business name. If you could not find the concerned business, try searching again with another keyword.

Step 5: Click on the ‘Details‘ link to view more information about the business. Now you’ll be able to view complete business details.

  • At the bottom of the page, you can check the filing and renewal history of the business. To order normal or certified copies of any filed document, simply select the document and click ‘Order Selected Copies‘ button.
  • To file any amendments/renewal, click on ‘Renewals & Amendments‘ button at the top of the page. You would need to create an online account with ‘Business & Liens‘ division to file it.

By Filing number

If you know the business filing number you can use this search option. Open Minnesota corporation records search page. Choose ‘File Number’ option. Similar to ‘Search by Name‘ follow the subsequent steps to conduct the search.

Note: Searching by filing number is accurate as each business is assigned a unique number by the Secretary of State.
