Missouri Business Entity & Corporation Search

Missouri state shapeThe Corporations division of Missouri Secretary of State is responsible for incorporation and regulation of businesses in the state.

It also keeps records of all the business entities online, which can be viewed by anyone. The search functionality can help view registration details of any corporation which files with the secretary of state.

Business entity search can be useful for anyone looking to find information about any business and check the availability of a business name. Business owners can make use of the search to file any amendments, annual reports or download any certificate.

On this page, we have explained how to navigate through the Secretary of state website and search for a business.

Missouri Business Entity Search

You can search for a business entity in Missouri in a variety of ways as discussed below:

  • By Name
  • By Registered Agent Name
  • Search By Charter ID

Note: Information about LLCs, LLPs, Corporations, agricultural cooperatives and mutual associations can only be searched.

Search by Name

Step 1: No matter what your preferred means of search be, you will first have to open the Missouri Business search page – Link.

Step 2: Select ‘Business Name‘ from the search drop-down if it’s not already selected.

Step 3: Enter the name of the business in the text box. The default option is to search for a business entity with a name that starts with your search phrase. Change this by selecting any of the options from the drop-down menu next to the search bar:

  • Starting with
  • All words
  • Any words
  • Exact match

Please note that if you are carrying out an ‘Exact Match’ search, you should include relevant punctuation and corporate designations such as ‘Inc.’ or ‘LLC’. This is not recommended for other kinds of searches.

Step 4: Click on ‘Search‘ button.

Step 5: On the next page, you can view the list of businesses that matched the search criteria. On this page, you can find the following information about each business:

  • Business Name
  • Charter No.
  • Type
  • Status
  • Created
  • Registered Agent Name

Step 6: Click on the desired name of the business and you will be taken to the business details page. You can find the following business details:

Name and AddressName and address of the Business Entity
Charter NumberUnique charter number assigned to the business
TypeProfessional Corporations / Close Corporations / Nonprofit Corporations / Limited Partnerships / Limited Liability Companies / Limited Liability Partnerships / General Partnerships
StatusActive / Inactive / Cancelled / Dissolved
Associated individualsNames and contact details of Manager or Agent
FilingsAny uploaded filings or documentation

Business owners/representatives for the entity can file documents online by clicking on ‘File Online‘ button, or order copies and certificates related to the business by clicking on ‘Order Copies/Certificates‘. A number of filings can be made, such as:

  • Amendments to articles of organization
  • Articles of Termination
  • Change of Agent or Address
  • Statement of Correction, etc.

Step 7: Those looking for further details about the entity can browse between through General Information, Filings, Address and Contact(s) tabs.

Search by Registered Agent

Step 1: Open Missouri corporation search page. Select ‘Registered Agent‘ from the drop down menu.

Step 2: Choose whether the agent is an individual or an organization before inputting your search query. Type in both the last and the first name to get more accurate results, although the minimum requirement is to enter the last name.

Step 3: Use the filters starting with, contain all or any words, or an exact match to fine-tune the search results.

Step 4: Click on ‘Search‘ button.

Step 5: On the next page, you can view the list of results with the following details:

  • Registered Agent Entity
  • Registered Agent Name
  • Reg. Office Address
  • Represents
  • Status

Step 6: Select the desired registered agent and click on it.

Search by Name Availability

The third search option is more relevant for aspiring business owners who want to look up the availability of a business name.

Step 1: Select ‘Name Availability‘ as your search option.

Step 2: Enter your desired business name and click on ‘Search‘.

Step 3: In this example, we searched for a business with the name ‘Garments’, and there were ‘No records to display’. This is a good sign and means that business name is up for grabs. If there are conflicts, you will see names of the conflicting companies instead of this message.

Note: Make sure to type the exact phrase you’re looking for, else you may not get the correct information. For example, while just the phrase ‘Garments’ returned no results, typing in ‘Garments of My Praise’ returned the following results:

Search by Charter ID

Each business is assigned a unique Charter ID when it is registered. Since there is no chance of overlap, this is the best way to search for a business and can be particularly useful for business owners looking to update information or download certificates.

Step 1: Select Charter ID as your search type and input your search query.

Step 2: Make sure you type in the correct Charter ID – it should be 11 characters long, with the first two characters being alphabets and the remaining being numbers. Click on ‘Search‘ button.

Step 3: Click on the business name in the Search results to access more details.
