The Pennsylvania Bureau of Corporations and Charitable Organizations (a sub-division of the department of state) maintains a searchable database for all the business entities registered in the state.

Basic information about each registered business is a matter of public record and can be accessed for free on the department of state website.

Note: Information on LLCs, LLPs, and Corporations are only available online.

Aspiring business owners can use the search functionality to check for business name availability. Additionally, the business search can be used to research information about any registered business, such as:

  • Date of formation and expiration

Pennsylvania Secretary of State Business Entity Search

You can search for a business entity in two ways – by Business Entity Name or Business Entity ID.


By Business Entity Name

(Also useful for checking business name availability)

Step 1: Open Pennsylvania Secretary of State business search page – Link.

Step 2: Here, you can carry out the search by partial name, complete name or entity number of the business.

Select ‘Only Active Corporations box‘, if you want to filter out any inactive businesses.

Step 3: Use the ‘Type Of Search‘ option to set appropriate filters.

  • Starting with – will show business names starting with the entered keyword.
  • All words – will show business names with all the entered keywords.
  • Any words – will show business names containing all the entered keywords.
  • Sounds like – Similarly sounding business names
  • Exact Match – will show business name exactly matching the query.

As an example, if you search for the phrase ‘technology’, you will see a list of business entities with the word ‘technology’ in their name. To identify the correct business, refer to the address, entity type, and number or status, as given below.

Step 5: Click on the desired business name to access more details about the entity.

If you have not found the right business, you can return to the search results by clicking on the ‘Back to Search’ button.

Step 6: On the next page, you can view complete details about the business:

Step 7: On this page, you can also download ‘Filed Documents’ on a chargeable basis. Each document will cost you $15 plus $3 processing fee.


By Business Entity ID

The second option for searching for any business is by using the official entity ID.

Step 1: Navigate to the Pennsylvania Department of state business search webpage.

Step 2: Enter the 7-digit business ID in the text box.

Step 3: If the entered ID is correct, you’ll be able to view the corresponding business information.

Step 4: Next, click either on the name of the business or the entity ID to view further information.
