Pennsylvania Business Entity & Corporation Search
Looking for information on how to conduct a business entity search in Pennsylvania? If yes, then you will find this guide helpful.
Before we go ahead, here are a few points you should know:
The Pennsylvania Bureau of Corporations and Charitable Organizations (a division of the department of state) maintains a searchable database for all the business entities registered in the state.
This information is a matter of public record and is freely accessible on the department of state website.
Note: Information pertaining to LLCs, LLPs, and Corporations are only available.
Benefits of conducting a Business Search
If you are considering starting your own business, it’s best to check and make sure that no pre-existing business shares a name that may conflict with yours.
The business search can also provide you with information about any registered business, such as:
- Business type and other specifications
- Date of formation and expiration
- Address and contact details.
Pennsylvania Business Entity Search
One can lookup for any entity in two ways, by using the Business Entity Name or Business Entity ID.
By Business Entity Name
Step 1: To find a registered business in Pennsylvania, start by visiting the Pennsylvania Secretary of State business search page – Link.
Step 2: You can search by partial name, complete name or entity number of the business.
You can select the ‘Only Active Corporations box‘ if you want to filter out any inactive businesses.
Step 3: Using the ‘Type Of Search‘ option, you can set appropriate filters.
- Starting with – will show business names starting with the entered keyword.
- All words – will show business names with all the entered keywords.
- Any words – will show business names containing all the entered keywords.
- Sounds like – Similarly sounding business names
- Exact Match – will show business name exactly matching the query.
As an example, if you search for the phrase ‘technology’, you will see a list of business entities with the word ‘technology’ in their name. To identify the correct business, refer to the address, entity type, and number or status, as given below.
Step 5: Click on the name of the required business to access more details about that particular entity.
If you have not found the right business, you can return to the search results by clicking on the ‘Back to Search’ button.
Step 6: On the next page, you will find additional details such as:
|Name||Business Entity Name|
|Name Type||Business Name Type – Current/Fictitious/Trade|
|Entity Number||Business Entity Number|
|Entity Type||Business Entity Type – LLC/LLP/Corporation|
|Status||Business Status – Active/Inactive/Terminated/Merged/Dissolved|
|Entity Creation Date||Date of Business registration|
|Effective Date||Effective date on which business was recognized as valid|
|State Of Inc||State of Incorporation|
|Title||Designation – Owner/Manager|
Step 7: One can also download ‘Filed Documents’ on a chargeable basis. An initial search fee of $15 is charged for any order, along with an additional fee of $3.00 per page. You will have to register an account prior to accessing this additional information.
By Business Entity ID
The second option for searching for any business is by using the official entity ID.
Step 1: Navigate to the Pennsylvania Department of state business search webpage.
Step 2: As mentioned above, the same search box can be used for searching by both name or ID. To search by ID, enter the 7-digit number assigned to that entity.
Note: The business entity ID provided by the Business Division of the Pennsylvania Secretary of State is a unique 7-digit number.
Step 3: Make sure that all the digits are accurate so that your search yields the right results. An accurate business ID search should show a single entry, for the business entity you are searching for.
Step 4: Next, click either on the name of the business or the entity ID to view further information.
