In Texas, business records of LLCs, Corporations or Partnerships is maintained by Texas Comptroller of Public Department. It is a sub-division of Texas Secretary of State which looks after incorporation and regulation of businesses in the state. It also maintains an online tool to search and view business records online.

What can the search uncover?

Texas business entity search can help you check if the name you have selected for your business is available for registration or not. It can also be useful to find critical information about any competing business such as owner name, address, registered agent details, etc.

Texas Business Entity Search

The search can be done by either:

  • Entity Name
  • Tax ID
  • File Number

By Entity Name

Step 1: Open the Texas business search webpage – Link (opens in new tab).

Step 2: Fill in the box which says ‘Entity Name‘ (as has been shown in the image below), with your search query.

Step 3: Complete the captcha and click on the ‘Submit‘ button.

Step 4: On the next page, you can see the list of businesses which have the searched string in their name. Along with the name of the business, tax ID number and zip code of the mailing address of the business will also be displayed.

Step 5: Click on the ‘Details‘ button next to the business entity name, to view further information.

Step 6: You will be taken to the business details page, where you can find the following information:

To view information about the officers associated with the business click on ‘Public Information Report‘ tab.

By Tax ID

Use this option if you know the 11-digit Comptroller’s Taxpayer number or the 9-digit Federal Employer’s Identification Number of the business.

Step 1: Open texas corporation search webpage – Link.

Step 2: Enter either the Taxpayer number or the Federal Employer’s Identification Number in the ‘Tax ID’ text box.

Step 3: Solve the captcha and click on the ‘Search‘ button.

If the entered ID is correct, you will be able to see the business associated with the ID.

By File Number

Use this search method if you know the file number assigned to the business by the Texas Secretary of State.

Similar to search by Tax ID, navigate to the business search page and enter the file number in the text box. Click on the ‘Search‘ button. On the next page, you can view the business associated with the file number.
