Virginia Business Entity & Corporation Search
In Virginia, the State Corporation Commission (SCC) maintains the records of all the registered business entities.
Basic information about each registered business entity can be accessed online on the Virginia Secretary of state website for free (link).
In this guide, we’ve shared step-by-step instructions on how you can search for a business entity on the SCC website. For information on name reservation or for checking the business name availability, refer to this link.
Information on LLC, LLP, Non-Profit, Sole Proprietorship, and Corporation registered in Virginia can only be found in the SCC database. For general partnerships, you would need to call the clerk’s office (804) 371-9733).
Virginia Business Entity Search
Step 1: Open Virginia State Corporation Commission Business search page – Link (Opens in new tab).
Step 2: Here, you have the option to either search by business name or SCC ID.
By Business Name: You can search by complete or partial name of the business. While searching, do not enter any punctuation or business endings like LLP, LLC, etc.
Following search filters are available for assistance:
- Keyword – Will show the list of businesses which contains the search term in the name.
- Starts With – Will show businesses beginning with the searched term.
- Contains – Will show business names containing the searched term.
For example – To search for a company ‘BreadCrumbs Technologies LLP‘, following combination can be used:
- Search Term: ‘Technologies‘ | Filter: Keyword
- Search term: ‘Breadcrumbs‘ | Filter: Starts with
- Search term: ‘Crumbs‘ | Filter: Contains
By SCC ID: The SOS assigns a unique eight character alphanumeric ID to each registered business. If you are aware of the ID, you can directly query the business information.
Step 3: Enter the search query in the text box and click on ‘Search‘ button.
Step 4: On the next page, you can view the list of business entities that match the search criteria.
Along with the business name, the following information will be shown:
- SCC ID
- Business Entity Name
- Entity Type
Step 5: Based on the available information, select the desired business entity. Click on the SSC ID or the business name to view further information.
Step 6: On the final page, one can view complete information about the business.
