Wisconsin Business Entity & Corporation Search

Wisconsin state shape

Looking for information on how to search for a business entity in Wisconsin. If so, then you have come to the right place.

Before we go ahead, here are a few points you must know:

Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions (WDFI) is the body which is responsible for incorporation and record keeping of business entities in the state. It is a unit of the Secretary of State which deals with the financial matters in the state.

All registered businesses in Wisconsin are allotted a seven-digit DFI Entity ID number and they are added to the Corporate Registration Information System (CRIS). The CRIS database is available online on WDFI website and anyone can search for a registered business using it.

Information on the following type of entities can be searched online:

  1. Business Corporations
  2. Limited Liability Company
  3. Limited Partnership
  4. Limited Liability Partnership

Note: Names of business members/officers are not stored in the database. Neither are business tax number or Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN), telephone numbers, tax information or trade names. Also, the database does not include sole proprietorship or general partnerships either, unless the latter has filed a voluntary Statement of Partnership Authority.

This resourceful guide will help you search for a business registered in Wisconin.

Basic Search – By Name/DFI Entity ID

Step 1: Open Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions corporation search page – Link.

Step 2: In the search box, enter either the complete/partial name of the business or registered DFI entity ID of the business.

Search Tips:

  • Prefer to Search by DFI ID. Searching by ID is faster and gives you more accurate results. DFI ID is a 7-digit number containing one alpha character and six numeric characters. It can be in two formats:  A###### or #A#####. Searching by valid DFI Entity ID will yeild single result only.
  • If you are not able to find a business name using the complete name, try entering partial name of the business.
  • Don’t add any extension such as LLC or Corp or any puntuations.

Step 4: Click on the ‘Search‘ button.

Step 5: On the next page, you can find the list of businesses which had the searched keywords in their name. In case of ‘Search by ID’, you will see one single result only.

If you encounter too many results, try searching again with a more precise search query or use the advanced search.

For instance, searching for ‘automobile repair‘ instead of just ‘automobile‘ yields 3 results instead of 77 results.

Step 7: Click on the desired business name to view more information.
